Re: Stripped vent screw insert

Good points by Roger and Paul. Many O-ring materials do not like oil
(especially neoprene). However, if you want to, you can replace your
o-rings with oil resistant materials. You can probably get a lifetime
supply for a couple bucks at www.mcmaster.com . Search for orings and you
can see material compatibilities, or find oring lubricants.
(don't work for them, but I do buy lots of things for work thru them -
you'll have it in a couple days)

Just be aware that o-rings may not be compatible with motor oil. Since
this isn't really a critical application it's probably not that big a
deal, just keep an eye on the o-ring and replace it if it starts to
fail.

I don't know if this tidbit adds anything to the collective thread or
not,
but after suffering through a couple of stubborn vent plugs myself I
discovered something that really keeps my plugs loose and water tight: a
drop of motor oil. I've seen wax melted over vents, and I've seen people
breaking screw drivers on the little things, but since I put a drop of
oil
on mine, I've had no leaks, the sand doesn't seem to slip in, and they
keep
turning.

The customer is getting a new replacement board, so we don't have to
worry about fixing this darn thing anymore. This turned out to be an
informative thread, and you have all added some more tidbits to our
collective knowledge base. Thanks guys!
