Re: Exocet Exo Wave Vs Universal Wave2

Hi Pat,
Here is the review that Windsurfing mag did on the OWave I 85 back in '03...

http://surfingsports.com/images/exocet_m85.jpg

"Pleased everyone"..."early planer"..."smooth all around performer"..."don't ride it if you aren't prepared to buy it"...

Anyone who has ridden the new ExoWaves, knows that they plane up early...and anyone who has ridden both the ExoWaves and the previous OW I & OW II versions, knows that the ExoWaves plane up earlier still...

You do the math...if the OW I was an "early planer" in '03...and the '06 ExoWave planes earlier than the OW I or OW II...anyways, you can put the calculator (and that WS mag review) down...;-)

The volume distribution , rocker, and planing ability make getting out through difficult surf easier...there have been several big days where I was the only one to make it out...using the ExoWave 105 , and I was bigger and using the same sail size, or smaller, than the lighter guys...

Furthermore, in regards to mag reviews...best to take with a grain of salt...here's one from the German Surf rag on the UW78...

"beginner freestyle board"..."an excellent ability to be used in shallow water for freeride and freestyle"..."performs as well in the shore brakes as in shallow water"..."The Exocet is spot on and particularly suitable as a learning platform for less advanced sailors at 80 kilos plus."

A 78 liter waveboard is a "suitable learning platform for less advanced sailors at 80 kilos plus."...?!?!

SMOKE ANOTHER ONE!!!

I sailed yesterday on my UW78...I was the ONLY guy sailing...;-)

That guy is on drugs...
Sounds to me that whoever wrote the review is a shallow water freestyler...
Their review makes me wonder if they've even ridden it in waves...they definitely didn't ride it in good waves...it sure seems to "fulfil the radical needs of pure wave riding" for us...

BTW, is there "pure wave riding" in Germany?

I think the French mag had it closer:

UNIVERSAL WAVE2 78
Planche Mag March 2005:
The storm-tamer
Produced in sophisticated double sandwich wood carbon, it’s really light. The Universal is a very stable board, quick on a plane and super easy. One of, if not the most comfortable in the group, it also rides the chop very smoothly. Feeling light and responsive, the U78 provides unequalled control in the jumps. We could use it in winds up to 40 knots without much trouble... Effortless sharp turns in the surf with an exceptional smooth carving ability. The board behaves exceptionally well in on shore conditions and travels through whitewater with ease. Good accelerations during take-offs and lot of maneuverability in the air.

"the U78 provides unequalled control in the jumps. We could use it in winds up to 40 knots without much trouble... Effortless sharp turns in the surf with an exceptional smooth carving ability. "

I've ridden it in pure waves in California, the Baja, and Maui...and it rips!

If you want a comparison of the ride...think Starboard EVO...only a little more comfy in higher winds because of the shock absorbers and the thinner, more pulled tail...I ride them interchangeably...UW II 78 and EVO 80/83...ExoWave 85...UW II 88...EVO 92...now EVO 91...

Here are the bigger brothers side by side...

We flew to the Baja and Maui twice last year...the UW 88 made all of those missions because of it's versatility...good minimalist one-board solution...
Just get two fins...;-)

I have used the UW88 in wound 4.5m2 conditions...very doable...
4.0m2 even for a heavy guy...the bottom of my quiver is a 4.2m2 these days...I'm usually the last guy sailing...or the only guy sailing like yesterday on my UW78...

The UW's are mostly front foot driven...HOWEVER, you can load up the backfoot...the ExoWaves are mostly backfoot driven...the reason is that the UW's are more pulled in the tail and thinner...

Here's an initial board review that I just got this morning from a new UWII 88 owner:

"Hi Warren:

I got out on the new board yesterday at CL in very gusty conditions. Very fun ride. Made for side on conditions...very loose and easy to sail. A true "wave feel" on the bottom turns due to the thinner rails.

It's a keeper."

Here's a helmetcam clip on Maui...kinda shows how smooth the ride is in Summer maui chop:

Be sure to read this spot on review of the ExoWave 95:

Notice how it says that this board loves to jump...
http://surfingsports.com/jalama_february/slides/jalama_february_wardog4.jpg

"Jumping:
Despite very choppy conditions, the power of this board makes for excellent take offs. You can keep your speed while turning upwind toward a ramp. It doesn’t slow down and responds efficiently to back foot pressure. On the bigger waves the speed allows first order jumps. To sum it up, - I don’t know a better board for jumping…"

Warm winds and waves...{:~)

Hey Wardog,
I know you carry Exocet and ride there shapes. What do you think of
this new Exo wave board and how does it compare to the U Wave 2?
Windsurfing Mag in there test said the Exo did not plane up very well.
I don' really trust there tests so I take em with a grain of salt.
I am looking at the Exo 85 liter and the U Wave2 88 liter board and I
sail just north of Santa Cruz mostly at Davenport.
I have an O Wave2 105 which I absolutetly love super smooth easy to
plane and turns pretty darn good for a big board.
If anybody has some experience with these boards please chime in.
