I have a lot of 8mm PAL camcorder tapes that I would like to transfer
them to DVD but all I am able to get is a PAL Hi8 camcorder
Yes, a Hi-8 camera will play regular 8mm (Video8) tapes.
If you want to transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD (using your computer to
edit), you might want to get a Digital8 camera instead.
A Digital8 camera will digitize your video using the DV-AVI codec (13
gig an hour) and all you need is a firewire card (also known as 1394)
in your PC and a firewire cable to transfer it over. Once it's on your
PC you can easily edit the video and then encode and author a DVD.
I have heard, however, that not all Digital-8 cameras will play regular-8 and Hi-8 tapes, and that some of those that do, won't digitize them.
To PA28-181:
If that is correct, you should be sure to verify that the particular camera you are interested in will play and (if you need it) will digitize your regular-8 tapes.
