As far as I know the burner has to recognise the disk, 16 times disk were

Which makes it all the stranger that it has no problem burning the 16x Memorex disks even though the manual says "8x or slower" for DVD-R. Sony could not explain why they worked.
It also burns Sony 8x disks; I bought some yesterday and they work like a champ. So it's specifically the imation 8x disks that it doesn't like. As for imation being "not well known"; the UW uses imation tapes for backup.
Curiously, the imation 8x disks were the most expensive of the lot.
The burners are quite cheep now so buy a new one and this time not a Sony.
Remember that the burner that I have is not a computer drive; it's video equipment (a combination VCR/DVD) and not particularly cheap at $400. It records video in real time, and thus always at 1x.
It's also a relatively modern product.
