Re: DirecTV Nightmare

The 722 HD-DVR is incredible, will receive AND record OTA broadcasts, you
can record three shows while watching another off the hard drive. It will
drive 2 TVs, one HD the other SD, which no additional receiver fee.
Ditch DTV, and enjoy EXCELLENT picture quality, lower
programming costs, and superior quality equipment with Dish Network.

I never thought I'd sound like a commercial for the cable company, whom
I couldn't stand. But my experience so far with DirecTV has been a
nightmare. I've given up on the other issues (lies about getting Weather
Channel "Local on the 8's", whether I need a phone line, charging extra
for high-def NFL Sunday ticket broadcasts, weather "won't affect your
signal"), but if someone could help with our most serious problem below,
I'd appreciate that and probably be happy.

What happens is that we often go to watch a channel, or during a show,
the screen just whites out and we get the 771 searching for satellite.
Then we have to reset the box and everything is fine (after waiting
about 15 minutes while it says "Almost done"). So the problem shouldn't
be the dish alignment - everything is fine after a box reset! I think
this only happens on our main box, the HD/DVR one. The worst part is
that when we record shows on the DVR and this happens, we get nothing.

This happened last night again, we were watching starz and went to watch
a local channel, and it was on the 771 error. i went to view the
satellite signal strength page and all the satellites (101, 110, 119,
99, 103, 103c) were showing 0. I just tried it again this morning, same
thing. Reset the box and everything is fine. I think it's mostly local
channels, mostly (but not only) high definition.

DirecTV always says when I call them that they will send a technician
out (yeah, for $80!). I don't have that, this is costing me enough due
to the hidden costs that weren't explained well by the sales person.
They have some service plan, more money each month. The cable company
never hesitated to send someone out if there was a problem - for free. I
guess you only get 90 days with directv. i complained about this since
the start but they played me off until after the 90 days. this seemed to
get worse after the recent ice storm and high winds, but the dish is on
a post at ground level and the weather is clear, the dish doesn't appear
to have been moved and again everything is fine after a reset on the box
so the dish should be fine.

Can anyone help?
