Ha, you are confused, first this is about /dev/sda, so the whole card,
including boot sector and what have you, not the simple brain dead partition
automount that MS Sofffware does.
Automount? Why invite trouble?
You're confusing SUSE4 from around 1999, and what the poster said -
"modern operating systems".
No way.
I run grml modified so it does what I want to do.
I have XUbuntu on my netbook which automounts its SD card and it's no
trouble since it's *required* (by me) as I have /usr parititioned onto
that device to make the OS fit on the hardware.
I have Xandros on an eeePC and disabled the auto mount shit.
Since that moment it works just fine.
Before that it bothered me with pop up messages about finding something.
Doesnt it bother you that Xandros is a toy OS ?
And, honestly, MS Sofffware does not even read my ext2 formatted cards, like
I use for example in my backup server for the net content.

And I'd like you to propose a Linux install which automatically mounts
and reads OSX formatted partitions without user intevention ...
OSX? wow, anybody uses that?
I run a very heterogenous ship here - Win7, Ubuntu, a Mac mini,
several dual boot XP/2000 or XP/Vista, an NLSU running busybox and so
forth. All linux shop at work thankfully, and Xen virtualised (any
Unix) on EC2 platforms.
My point if you need it spelling out is an OS is mostly just an OS -
with the right tools, the lines blur in terms of fitness for purpose.
I wouldn't expect a newbie to handle a grown up Linux or BSD (aka OSX)
variant, but with the appropriate GUI layers (eg xandros) relatively
complicated hardware can become usable by people at all levels of
accomplishment (think OLPC and the ilk).
It's horses for courses, what might fit you would not fit many people.

OS Comparison FAIL (back to school for you)
What blubber sentence is that?
Linux mounts most file systems, how ever obscure those may be, even the idiotic
file system normally used on SDcard.
Luckily your needs differ from all other users on the planet, in that
you have a homogenous system with no apparent compatibility speedbumps
which need to be resolved.
I just use the best solution for the problem.
If you want to use Vista and be a victim of MS marketing grills, fine for you.
You can walk on your hands too, if you try hard enough.
But it is not a very efficient way to go shopping.
How exceedingly fortunate for you (and what a small small world you
live in). The rest of us have to deal with a multitude of source
systems and don't have the luxury of sitting on the particular
mountain you're on to look down on less fortunate users** in the ~real
world~
Yea, I dunno, I am fortunate because I write practically every application myself,
including those for video and audio editing, so, and some other people actually
benefitted judging by the numbers of downloads.
If you are just a software user, and no software author, then yes, you are a playing
ball of whatever we (I) will think of next.
Be grateful for your Linux on your netbook, who knows who wrote part of that.
My personal opinion on people like .. .well _ go f*ck yourself if you do not like it.
Use it if you like it, and most important: If you do not like it, then improve it if you can.
THAT is how it all came about.
** Or come to think of it - CUSTOMERS.
DVDs I make with my software are better, and play everywhere.
When reading some newsgroups I get the impression that some cannot even get one to play.
Let alone edit or create one.
So what customers?
