hi folks,
got an older GL2 camcorder, which I intend to keep using; but it's
stressful on the cam to use the VCR features, so I'm wanting to spring
for an editing deck.
i'm wondering if anyone could recommend a decent pro-sumer level
playback deck for MINI-DV ... 'twould be nice to be forwardly
compatible to the newer HD / miniDV format as well.
don't need any fancy capabilities, just forward, rewind, etc with USB &
FW; something in the $2000 price range would fit nicely.
any opinions or user testimonials would be great,
thanks,
GB
Look for a JVC SR-DVM600US (miniDV/DVD/40 GB hard drive).
B&H has them for $850.00 U.S., less for demo models.
I've had two of the previous model (miniDV/DVCAM/SVHS only) in student
edit suites for almost 4 years now and they've been great.
To future-proof yourself, you're looking at something like the Sony
HVR-M15U (HDV/DVCAM/miniDV) but, at $1,750.00, it's out of your price
range :-(

thanks mike, that's a very versatile machine.
the only 2 others in my budget range are the SONY HVRM15U ($1900) and
PANASONIC's AG-DV2500 ($1750); both can play back DVCAM as well as
regular DV; they seem to be more in the line of professional equipment;
the JVC has more a "consumer" feel to it. (but tempting, dammit)
I agree that the JVC has more of a consumer feel to it.
If you can afford it, I'd personally go with the Sony as I've never been a
big fan of Panasonic decks.
A friend of mine has the Sony in his post house and is very happy with it.
Mike
Panasonic DVC stuff is widely used in the news world. I had a
client-provided deck in my truck last weekend and it was fine. It wouldn't
be my first chocie either, but I don't think you'd hurt yourself with it.
I'd go Sony or Panasonic in that order. I actually own a JVC miniDV
camcorder, but I don't think I'd trust them for critical gear. It has made
air a time or 2, though.
