Sony Vegas Pro 8 (NOT their lesser two versions!) works VERY well
with HDV, and it is *VERY* versatile and professional, with features
not seen elsewhere, to my knowledge.

Thanks. Vegas was the first NLE software I used because I found it very
intuitive. I switched to CS3 because I liked the suite, but I find
Premiere to be overly bloated and this little stunt they pulled with the
Dolby Digital plug-in that's only trial and must be purchased (above
Adobe's already steep price) has made me swear off Adobe for good.

The reason I was asking about Avid is that I could get my hands on a
recent version of Media Composer, which seems pretty powerful. I just
don't want any more "surprises" costing me more $$$ down the road.

For sure...! ;-)
The three editing programs I compared all have 30-day trial versions,
but I guess you would need to look at the "fine print" to see what is
not really included (though I think all three handle 5.1 - but I'm not
very interested in it...). I would also check on the codec used for image
processing, and where it ranks compared with the MainConcept codec
for HDV processing before buying. Too bad, but I think the "back
door" cheap way to buy Vegas Pro 8 is now closed - but it is worth a
look (buying Vegas 6 for about $80, and the 8 upgrade for about $100).
