I've just found out that my $1,500 copy of Adobe Premiere CS3 which was
certified to do HDV has a trial Dolby Digital plugin which I must purchase.
Perfect. And here I thought M$ were the only weasels to rape you with
trialware included in your legally-purchased software.
OK. So now I'm looking into alternatives. Are there other DD plugins I can
use with Adobe Premiere?

Personally, I would not use CS3 for editing HDV - it has the same
limitations that Premiere Elements 4 has with HDV (and it doesn't do
all that much more - see my reviews of three [plus CS3, briefly]
programs, at www.donferrario.com/ruether/hdv-editing.htm). The
problems: rendering is PAINFULLY slow, and ALL material is
recompressed, not just changed parts - and this process damages
image quality any where from almost undetectably to unacceptably
badly. Bleah!
A decent (but VERY limited program) that *can* work with HDV
*if* your footage has no problems is Ulead VideoStudio 11+ (cheap).
A much better one (but pricey) is Sony Vegas Pro 8 (the cheaper
Vegas versions either do not handle HDV or offer no advantages
over the Premiere offerings), which is truly professional-grade
software.
