I have seen way too much online video that had no business ever being
made. For example, they hired a kid to run the web page for one of my
local banks, and what he did was take the FAQ page, remove all the
text and he turned all the Q and A's into streaming video clips. So
that, instead of reading the Q and reading the 2-3 sentence answer,
right there, in seconds, you now have to click on the question, wait
to download the quicktime clip, OF THE GUY READING THE SAME @$!%#
SENTENCES TO THE $%$^# CAMERA!!!!! With a crappy, non-lit wide shot
and audio grabbed from the on-camera shotgun mic!!!
Turning a simple, direct, 5-second information exchange process
into a five-minute one if you are on dial-up, and a thirty second one
if on broadband. I told the bank CEO I would never trust an
institution with my money if their judgement was so bad on this.
What my point is, is that REAL video communication is using,
leveraging the words, and the images to make the meaning clearer and
more effective than either words or pictures alone. If you're not
doing that, what you have is "radio with pictures", not video.
Not everything online needs to be communicated using motion video.
But where video might specifically be able to help, what you need most
and first is a good SCRIPT, one that understands the material and
communicates it effectively and economically. If all you're doing is
reading powerpoint slides to a camera, you fail.
