Re: DV to mpeg application?

Neil,

No all around. I guess I was not clear.

When connected to an external monitor, my laptop's video card (nvidia
GeForce Fx Go5200) can be set to play videos full screen on the external
screen, and simutaneously in a window (in media player or other player) on
the laptop's screen. In this way I can rearrange the playlist of videos (as
well as do other things) while the videos play continuously on the external
in fullscreen. The loop plays on several monitors in a booth on a
convention center floor for the entertainment of the attendees.

As I stated, I have an external DV <-> analog box (Sony DVMC-DA2) for
converting VHS for capturing on my PC. My question was, what application
will capture a DV input directly to mpeg, and allow me to select the data
rate of the mpeg I create?

OK then in that case I'd use VideoLAN to connect to the DV input
device, and transcode from DV-AVI to MPEG2 , optionally streaming the
result over http to the player : http://www.videolan.org/

Yes I can digitally convert the DVDs but it is faster to just capture them
analog, and the quality is fine.
This is an example of the Sony box I have...

Next month I will be working in a booth on a convention floor. I will be
in
the position of having to receive bunches VHS tapes and DVDs from
clients,
and convert them to mpegs. I will play these mpegs in a playlist using
media player, to a collection of monitors that plays throughout the day.
I
have a nice external Sony analog-to-DV box. My question is this - what
is
the best application for capturing DV video directly to mpeg? I am
looking
for a 4mbit mpeg or so as the final product, to split the difference
between
quality and filesize.

I'm having trouble visualising this - you're saying you'll capture
VHS, and are you intending to play it back while capturing ?

I wonder if it might be as simple (given the low bandwidth of VHS)
simply to plug a TV card into the box, if necessary using that to MPEG
the input directly while playing it back.

DVD of course *is* MPEG2 video, so again I'm unclear if you want to
conver DVD-MPEG -> Analog -> DV -> MPEG2, it seems rather long winded
to me (without knowing what the reason is for that loop)

The idea behind using media player is: Video runs fullscreen on monitors
while PC stays showing a desktop. In this way the playlist can be added
to
or shuffled as needed while the videos play, providing a nonstop image to
the booth.

I'm assuming you mean using windows media professional exhibitor ?

It will be worth sorting out your overlay settings on the second
monitor beforehand, to be sure of the right result.

WMP will play on the primary surface (an overlay) unless you change
the settings in Tools -> Options -> Performance -> Advanced -just in
case you unexpectedly see a black playback area on the 2nd output).
Most graphics cards of course can be configured to do without
overlays, but you'd have to know which settings to mung.
