Re: Newbie considering real time options

Um, I think what you're refering to is not so much editing as switching
live sources to tape?

No NLE system can actually output in "real time", that is, they can
ingest in real time, then let you edit and play out, but if you are
covering a live event, what you do is run the cameras into a video
switcher, adding live effects and graphics on the fly, then into your
recording or storage medium of choice for further processing.

There is no editing system readily available (that I'm familiar with)
that can ingest more than one live input at the same time, let alone
five.

Here are some things to look at that will enable you to switch live
events and edit them:

Newtek Video Toaster4 and Newtek Tricaster.

Sony Anycast workstation

(those two can not only live switch, but also record to hard drive as
well as stream live to the internet)

Switcher-only solutions, require additional graphics input and
redcording decks:
Mac laptop with channel storm livechannel;

Portable switchers from Grass Valley, Datavideo, Echolab, Leitch, and
videonics.
