JVC GR-D244, help it's broken

Hello all,
My JVC GR-D244 Mini DV Tape camcorder is broke. When I insert the tape
and shut the tape carriage it does not pull itself into the unit (like
it is supposed to do). As a result the unit must remain opened with
the tape carriage sticking out. The view finder screen does work and
displays the "no tape" symbol on the screen. Anyone have any ideas?

It was purchased from Target prior in December and we lost the receipt.
Does anyone have any info regarding JVC warrantee or Targets return
policy?
