I'd stick with DVD. There's no guarantee that VCD and/or SVCD discs will play in all DVD players. Also, most NLE software is designed to author DVDs. The others, especially SVCD, are not featured that often.

It's dvd im backing the tapes to but, I can choose which resoulutions to capture the footage in first
720*576 480*576 352*288
will 480*576 be ok or should I go for the full 720*576 ?
Only you can decide where the cost/benefit ratio falls.
Not clear that writable optical discs will be a better long-term storage than the original tapes themselves. .
