I use a Sony combo rig, and surprisingly, it has held up rather well
over these last 18 months (longer than I ever anticipated), but it's
missing one feature that drives me nuts ... an AUTO-OFF.

Yes, this unit does have a power-off option. but it works for the VHS
tape side ONLY, not the DVD.

This doesn't make any sense to me when it should apply to either format
in the same deck, but that's why I'd like to know if there are any DVD
players (or recorders) out there that would allow me to go to sleep to
a title without the rig staying on (and in play mode) the entire night.

I've looked around, but to no avail ... nothing I've found boasts an
auto-off mode, but maybe that's because I've been looking in all the
wrong places?

The link below is for the VCR/DVD Panasonic combo that I have, and it says it has Auto Off; and I believe I remember finding it had turned off, after I had forgotten about the music CD I had left in the player... once. :)

Since I haven't played but one VCR tape since I've had it, there's no confusion about which side shut down. I've only had it 3 months.

Here's the link FWIW, it is NOT a recorder though, only a player:

Hope it doesn't line wrap on you. ;) bj

To make sure I am not misleading you, I decided to find the Panasonic Instruction Manual [which BTW is the worst organized I have ever seen], and see what it says... if I could find it.

Unfortunately, the only thing about "Auto-OFF" that I can find quickly is under "SPECIAL VCR Features". I read somewhere that this manual hasn't been updated in 4 years [which is easy to believe]... so I don't know what to tell you. I do know though, that I wasn't using the VCR... when mine shut down... for whatever reason. :)
