After writing the previous reply, it occurred to me, that I do
have enough hardware to do a test similar to yours. This is
what I hooked up.

What I was particularly interested in, is where I could find
proof the software and drivers knew there were "two display
channels" inside the single GPU chip.
On my older computers, the evidence is more explicit. If I
go into Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), there are two identical
entries in Device Manager. And that proves the display subsystem
has two clear paths for rendering in clone, span or whatever
other display mode I might choose.

--- VGA conn=3Dr
=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0--- Display Channel (logic) ----- VGA DAC=
____ proof the GP=3Dector
Now, on my laptop, the evidence isn't in Device Manager any more.
There is only one display entry.
I had to use Lavalys Everest, to obtain the proof. This free version
is old now, so can't identify all the hardware devices by name, but
it is still good enough to examine details about hardware.

The next section, compares what Device Manager tells me, versus what
Everest can see.

Now, if you find your situation is different, all I can
suggest at this point, is look for a newer display driver
for your laptop graphics chip. The best place for that,
is the laptop manufacturer. On desktops, you go to
ati.com or nvidia.com, while laptops the first choice
is the laptop manufacturer.
On much older drivers, there was actually a button in
the custom (Nvidia) display control panel, to turn on
support for dual monitors. And when you'd do that,
an actual software installer would run for a couple
seconds. I'm not aware of that clunky feature
existing any more. Like my laptop, it should
be working already.

These are the two EDID dumps, for my laptop built-in LCD panel,
and for the external monitor. To operate in clone mode,
where both screens display the same data, the OS selected
1024x768 as a resolution common to both monitors. That
left the laptop display with black bars on left and right.
In order to avoid screwing up the laptop, I didn't do any
additional work, to make the actual display setup useful
(as I need to put the monitor back on this desktop :-) )

Your issue could be the driver, or the configuration setup,
in which case, Everest may have the evidence of the
problem.

HI, =A0when I hooked up my laptop to the new monitor and went to device
manager, it showed 2 displays, but they were identical. I almost
deleted it, but didn't. I do have =A0a fn key and crt/lcd and all i get
when pressed is a square shape with a lot of snow only. I just called
the manufacturer tech support and they said by pressing those keys, i
should =A0have gotten a picture. In control panel it does show 2
monitors, one larger than the other, designated as #1 and #2. So
apparently its acknowledging that their are 2 monitors present. I did
this with my laptop and desktop. So, I guess i got a lemon. I want to
thank you all the effort you have displayed. I have to decide to
either return it or enjoy the hdtv part and keep it.
If you are seeing snow, you are somehow seeing the tv tuner part of the T=

You do know that you have to switch the TV to the VGA input using the fro=
the TV or via your remote? It doesnt automagically detect it.
If you read some of the posts here, you would have known that I know
how to get to the vga with the TV output. Perhaps you should read the
posts before you enter a reply. ..but no harm done just a clue

another input like the tv tuner.
I am just trying to help.
