VOB files on commercial DVDs are almost always copy protected.
The two easiest options are to get a utility like DVD Decrypter, or
a capture box like the Canopus ADVC-100 (it must be this model,
as later models such as the ADVC-110 cannot strip copy protection).
The first of these two options is much faster, as VOB files are simply
read from disk, decrypted and written as regular MPG files, without
having to view them.

My long term goal is to put 100+ VHS tapes onto hard drives for
network storage. Some are family tapes from VHS camcorder, some old G
rated kids movies. The kids, some with Downs, watch the same video 4
X a day sometimes, and the tapes are wearing out.
I'd rather not have to watch the videos as I capture and convert to
digital. If I use a capture device (capture card or Digital8 camera)
I have to be there to stop the recording. So I thought I would get a
VHS to DVD recorder - purchased a Sony(Model RDR-VX535). First it
said one VHS was copyrighted and wouldn't copy to DVD. OK, not
exactly a benefit to me, but OK. Then another VHS tape copied, but
when I went to put the DVD into the computer to convert the vob files
into mpg it would not even copy the vob from DVD onto the computer
hard drive. Never had this happen! Then I tried VideoReDo to
convert. It would do only 2 frames, not seconds, frames, at a time,
then stop. I fiddled and got it to convert one vob file, but audio
was completely messed up so that was not useable.
My question is: does Sony create copy protected vob files on it's DVD
recorder? I can't think of any other reason why the vob file won't
copy and VideoReDo won't work. I tried also to copy vob with name
change to mpg; that didn't work either.
Next question: Is this true for all brands, or just Sony? If I buy a
Samsung or Panasonic, will I be able to do what I want? Or is their
vob file also protected? (I have found Sony is absolutely
unreasonably paranoid about copy protection.) I can capture the old
fashioned way via capture card or through D8, but with auto-dub VHS to
DVD I don't have to monitor the capture and can leave for hours and
when I return the DVD recorder has shut off when the VHS tape ends.
Plus it's more convenient to have it all in one package; and the Sony
upconverts to somewhat better quality and sends output via HDMI to
TV. All are better features than just manually copying all these
blinkin' kids tapes!
