What resolution would I have to change digital photos to in order to

In my early attenpts peoples heads get cut off when displaying the
photo on a wide screen TV as the picture resolution is wrong.

It isn't a resolution question, it is an aspect ratio problem.
The number of horizontal pixels must be in a 16/9 ratio to the number of
horizontal pixels. There are now three different resolutions for the 16
x 9 widescreen mode, based on 480, 720, or 1080 rows of pixels. If you
are using good software, many packages will allow you to set the
resolution mode, and take care of the scaling in the software
automatically. You have to determine what resolution (i.e, 480, 720, or
1080) you want the video to be, which of course depends on whether the
display TV is high def or standard def.
Thanks Don for your reply
The problem is that there are too many different types of TV's these
days and I need to know of a general ratio that is suited to most TV's
I wish all DVD players added a black bar to the widescreen picture
shown on a 4:3 ratio TV so that nothing gets cut from the picture but
some DVD players enlarge the picture and often parts of the picture at
the ends gets cut off.
