I hadn't realised the names were so tolerant. So that revelation will
make an enormous difference to my thinking.
Of course, it still means there's a lot of manual work to be done in
renaming. For example, suppose I open this HD folder on my 'WD My Book
USB 1TB drive' (like Netmask's BTW):
That sounds like a good one, I was just passing on what appears
to be a commonlly reported issue with that kind of external drive.
Just something to be aware of, you and Netmask seem to have
found a peach instead of a lemon.
K:\DVD Archives\2003 Hols
It contains two subfolders, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. I'll delete
AUDIO_TS. (I was nervous about that before you just told me it was
unnecessary, despite it being empty, as I vaguely thought I'd once had
a program object to not finding it.) And I'll rename VIDEO_TS to '2003
Hols'.
That now contains these:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1.VOB
Good so far, the "2003 Hols" folder is now a DVD, that
you can play.
I know (either by playing the IFO and looking at the menu, or playing
individual VOBs, or - more quickly - from my spread*** DVDIndex.xls)
that it contains two tracks (chapters? I've never been 100% sure about
the right term). These are called 'Marl' and 'Mayrhofen'.
The most used term is Title. As in "Video Title Set" (VTS).
The "Video Object" (VOB) files contain the menus, the main
menu in the VIDEO_TS.vob and the menus for each title in the
VTS_xx_0.vob; as well as the video and audio streams of the
titles in the other VTS_xx_x.vob.
But after that manual cross-referencing and renaming exercise I do
indeed now have a much more meaningful structure:
2003Hols.BUP
2003Hols.IFO
2003Hols.VOB
Marl.BUP
Marl.IFO
Marl.VOB
Mayrhofen.BUP
Mayrhofen.IFO
Mayrhofen.VOB
BTW, I found that the only one of my DVD players that would open these
IFO files was Power DVD. Media Player Classic just hung showing
'Opening' (and after being closed left the mplayerc.exe process
running). VLC also failed. Are there any other DVD players that open
IFOs apart from Power DVD please?
The players do seem to have their own quirks. You can Drag&Drop
the .ifo on Media Player Classic (MPC) and it will play. Depending
on how your OS shell is setup, you can right-click and "Open with..."
MPC, WinDVD and some others ( not my version of PowerDVD);
VLC doesn't play the .ifo but will play the folder directly or the .vobs.
If you installed VLC with the shell extensions enabled, you can
go to "K:\DVD Archives\" and right-click on "2003 Hols" (or
any other DVD folder) and select "Play with VLC media player".
I'll now test out how easily I can get at individual 'clips', along
the lines you suggest, starting with VideoRedo.
Thanks again for that detailed response.
