I make DVD's fairly often. Sometimes its a DVD-Video and sometimes its
a DVD-Rom where I put avi files which will play on my stand alone dvd
player, which happens to play avi files.

I use Nero to burn and have to chose dvd-rom or dvd-video. I can make
my dvd files with TMPGEnc or with different video editing software I
have. This is where I do fancy user-friendly and eye-pleasing menus.
But when I burn avi files onto a dvd-rom I cannot do this. It is just
a list of files like you would see in "my computer" but on my tv
screen. The file names are horribly truncated.

TMPGEnc and my other programs wont let me author with avi, they insist
on an mpeg file. But my stand alone dvd player wont play mpeg, so
there's a little catch 22 here.

Please note I do not wish to convert these avi files. Just burn.

I am hoping there is some down and dirty freeware someplace that might
let me make some menu, nothing too fancy, when I burn avi files onto a
dvd-rom.

My googling for this leaves me wanting, so I am asking you kind folks.

The problem is that your standalone DVD player only knows how
to respond to authored DVD Menus.

If it is a DivX Certified Player then you could try:http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tda3.html#tabs
(But it appears that you may have already tried that.)

You might want to look into a "Media Player" of some kind, they
run the gambit from external hard drive enclosures with A/V outputs
and remote controls to networked HD devices.

What I do to display HD AVC/H.264 is just have a mid range PC
setup as an HTPC (Home Theater PC).  I then make HD menus
with Multimedia Builder.http://mmb.mediachance.com/index.html

Some old menus:http://www.flickr.com/photos/19784419@N08/sets/72157603066685633/detail/

I need a reasonably powerful setup to play the HD AVC files,
you could probably get by with a very modest PC, there are
plenty in the $300 range that would work.

DivX Author program - of course. I should have thought of that. I just
downloaded a trial and it does exactly what I described above. AVI and
DivX are pretty much the same thing. Ive seen ads for DivX Author
before.
Gracias
