As with most Sony MiniDV cams they can play and output a PAL/NTSC signal.
When I go to capture using WMM on XP the input is garbled. Even if I
set WMM to PAL the preview is completely garbled. NTSC works fine.
I tried and had the same thing using WinDV and CaptureFlux.
Typically, they can do some simple internal tricks to play
PAL on the internal viewfinder. But it takes more than that
to construct a proper PAL datastream to output on the
Firewire (or analog output).
If you look carefully at the specs, you will likely find that
it says you can view PAL, but not play it back for output.
There are only some specific models that are full-featured
for both NTSC and PAL. (Sony DSR-11, for example).
Of course you could confirm that by trying to plug the output
into a PAL monitor/TV/etc. Assume you have no other PAL
source with which do to a proper differential diagnosis?
It will output a PAL signal - as I plugged the cam into a composite TV,
and played the tape, the picture rolled all over the place.
