Hello, I'm looking for an entry level (or close to it)
Mini DV camcorder that has the analog in (pass-thru) feature so that I can digitize my old HI8 tapes.
I might be open to other formats but I want to keep the
price below $300. I've seen the Canon ZR200 online,
for $239 but it's a few years old.
Can anybody suggest some models I can look at.
You might like to look at the Sony Digital 8 camcorders, most of them can play back the analogue tapes & output a digital stream directly to your computer to put the result on DVD. It depends how long you want to keep the results for, as writable DVD don't have much of a shelf life compared to magnetic tapes. On the other hand, storing on hard drive with a decent backup policy can be pretty robust.
This recorder will definitely play back your existing tapes, & give you a reserve playback deck as well, unless you inist on using Mini DV tape storage for your archive:-

It may be easier to use your existing camcorder & play back into a decent digitiser.
