Can any of the later models of DVD player handle (play) AVI files?

www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers lists playback compatibility
information for 9257 models (as of this writing). They have
searchable categories for several different disc, video, and
audio formats. But they don't even mention "AVI".

Now that doesn't seem too surprising considering that "AVI"
is NOT a type of file. It is a type of *container* which can
contain encoded media using any of several hundred different
codecs.

If a PC can, seems to me that a dedicated player should be
able to do so.

But a PC can-NOT play an AVI file unless it has the appropriate
codec installed that will allow it to decode the contents.

Avoiding quality loss by avoiding conversion,

It is hard enough to keep up with all the different codecs on a
computer where you have interactive operation, and access to
the internet where you can download the codec you need.
DVD players have only one (or at most 3-4) different codecs
embedded in their firmware.

and much longer playing
time seem very attractive potential advantages.

Remember that the kind of compression used for video DVD
discs is typically MORE compressed than the kinds of AVI
files we commonly use (like DV-AVI, etc.)

Just the opposite and certainly not the case here. For these
people DivX or XviD, is what they mean by AVI files, most
of the time. If they talk about putting more episodes/movies
on a DVD than they can in the proper DVD format, it is not
DV-25 that they are talking about.

If it is DivX they can buy cheap "DVD" players that will
also play their DivX AVI files off a data disk.

Luck;
