Yeah I know, gonna get trolled again, but ...
I often download AVI files from P2P sites. The AVI files
play jes' fine on both my PC and DVD players.
Normally I use NeroVisionExpress to import these AVI
files and create a set of BUP, VOB, and IFO files
with a neat menu as a DVD image.
However, the AVI files take up way less room on a disc.
I can get pretty near an entire TV series on one disc,
while getting 3 to 4 episodes on a disc in DVD format.
Given that I am starting with AVI files, I don't believe
that converting to DVD image adds anything quality wise.
I must be missing something here. Is there a benefit
to creating the DVD image or is a disc full of AVI files
just as good?
Most modern DVD players, well at least down here in Australia are compatible
DivX or Xvid or MP4 compatible (and region free) and that includes the $39
cheapies and has been the case for the last few years. So if I archive an
episodic TV series I just make 350MB Xvid files and put 12 on a DVD-R.
Playback either on my DVD player or over the network from the original files
on the hard disk. On quality of course an avi file in the form of DivX is
not going to be the same quality as a 5GB MPEG TS file but it's a case of
trading off quality versus convenience. Personally I prefer the Xvid codec
to DivX but the situation is fluid. When using terms like "AVI" files on a
group like this you need to be more specific such as DivX or MP4 or Xvid etc
or uncompressed avi's (and they are really large) the meaning will be
perceived by different users.
