I still think trying to use the batch function for this is more
trouble than it's worth. I would copy the VIDEO_TS folder
to your hard drive first, or do it with TDA, or DVDShrink or
any other ripping tool. They will all take the same amount of
time to do the job. Have your lunch while it is being copied
to your hard drive, then just put up with the one min. it takes
VRD to do your edits.

Thanks, now understood, appreciate your patience.
It seems pretty obvious now I *know*. But my confusion would never
have arisen if the VR Help under 'Batch Builder' had started with
something like "Unlike normal video editing, batch processing first
requires that you copy the VTS folder from DVD to your HD, and then
work with *that* copy."
Better still, a more thoughtfully-designed program would have done
that for you automatically at the outset. Like TMPGEnc's apps.
I fully agree with your conclusion and won't bother with Batch now
that I see the trade-offs. There would have to be many more edited
files involved than I anticipate for it to be worthwhile.
I've just copied a 4.24 GB VTS folder to my HD with Explorer, taking
marginally over 10:5 mins. (It was curious that, after steady
progress, when almost finished at about 9 mins it started revising its
completion estimate wildly many times, eventually taking about 90 s
from that point to finish, instead of the originally predicted 20s.
Presumably some sort of final clear up?)

I think the inclusion of this batch process, in VideoReDo was more
to support those using XML or other scripting to process their video.
( It could be handy for those working with the free DVD Author
project, for instance.)
I hope that copy of the VIDEO_TS folder came out OK.
