This is a bit off topic but you folks are the best bet of groups I'm subscribed to. I got a new LCD monitor, 26" Planar PX2611w and I use it for photo editing, video editing & watching movies: Playing DVDs the first couple I watched *without* blu-ray display with low gamut noisy shadows. The first was a new flick and I thought it was shot that way <g>. It's a Sony laptop and I'm running WinDVD BD for VIAO. This video, an old 1977 Mel Brooks, won't play in Windows Media Player, complaining: 'this disc is not formatted to play in this region' which I've never seen before. DivX stutters & only shows the opening 20th century fox logo. Lowering the bit depth & other settings with the video card didn't help. The C drive is awfully full at the moment (25 gig free on a 225 gig drive). The resolution is 1920x1200 with the laptop as a second monitor so maybe it's simply low resources though I've got 3GB ram & a decent video card on the new laptop.

What region is the DVD set to (it should be on the box somewhere).

What region is your player set to? I don't remember how to read that - maybe the player software can tell you.

It is set to Region 1 (US, etc). There was a problem with region before and an updated driver fixed it.

If they differ, that explains your error message.

OK, I experimented on determining the drive region. Go to the Device manager and look at DVD/CD-ROM drives (or a similar label). Right-click the DVD drive and select Properties. There is a tab labeled DVD Region, which will tell you what you need to know.

Sony's tech support of course is asking me to reinstall the windvd software. sigh
