In Magix Movie Edit Pro (both MEP-11 and MEP-14), when I view a JPG
photo in the monitor (whether normal or full screen), it seems
noticeably less bright than the original.

I edit my source photos before importing, and this difference makes it
difficult to predict the final result. I could end up doing further
editing in MEP, increasing the brightness too much.

Looking a bit deeper, I found that the settings in File > Program
Settings > Display Options are somehow involved. With Video Mode set
to 'Default mode (Overlay mixer)' I get the darkness issue. But with
it set to 'Compatibility mode (VideoForWindows)' the monitor and
original look the same. Can I therefore set that permanently? Or will
that cause some other problem? As you'll gather, my knowhow about the
technical graphics-rendering issues underlying these 'modes' is close
to zero.

Your video card drivers/control panel should provide
you with the ability to adjust the way the overlay mode
displays. I'm not sure how that will effect the final
rendered output, though. Rightclicking on the desktop
and selecting "Properties" should get you started. For
my AIT cards running with Omega drivers, I then select
the "Settings" tab, then the "Advanced" button. There I
have an "Overlay" tab. [There is a warning pop-up that
says "The overlay controls are automatically activated
during playback of any video file type that supports
overlay adjustments."]

The overlay adjustments I have available this way are:
Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Hue, and Gamma. There
is also a "Theater mode options..." button for dual-
controller Clone mode display settings.

Besides the Overlay tab settings the "Color" and the
"Color Management" tabs can effect the issue. Then
there is your display device/monitor's own settings.

What you have available will depend on your Video
Card and drivers. There are also "Tweaking" programs
that can adjust things as well.

Luck;
Ken

P.S. With MEP12 under the "Effects" tab I have "Movie
effect settings... (Ctrl+B)" which provides Master effects
adjustments on a per movie basis. This might be a better
solution.

Thanks Ken, I'll follow up both approaches.

Have you looked at MEP-14 (alias 'Video DeLuxe')? I forked out for it
impulsively, mainly to get 'proper' Ken Burns pan/zooms - but I've
encountered all sorts of flaws and bugs in my first couple of days
usage. While there's no denying the rich functionality of Magix MEP,
and hence value for money, I've so far found
- the programming quality poor
- the UI non-intuitive
- quality control before release patently unacceptable
- the (English) Help and PDF Manual poorly structured and hard to
follow in places, with inadequate indexes.

If there's one thing these products sorely need, next to working
properly, it's a decent in-context Help feature, familiar in many
applications. You should be able to hit F1 or click an icon and get an
up-to-date, version-relevant explanation of whatever dialog or feature
you're using.
