I recorded a 5 second test AVI video on a Samsung SC-DC164 MiniDVD
camcorder
with a SD memory card. This camera ouputs MPEG4 video. I can view this
video from the camera's LCD screen - so I know its okay. Using the
camera's USB cable - I can look at the
camera as a USB mass storage unit and I copy the AVI file from the
camera to
the computer. My problem is that when I try to playback this AVI
video. Both Windows
Media Player (ActiveX 9) both Quicktime can only playback the audio -
The picture
part of the video is missing. I am using Windows XP Pro. I tried
installing the
dv media driver I found on the samsung website but it had no effect -
I still couldn't
view the AVI video. I am puzzled as to why this is happening. I am
able
to record, download, and view (to the same computer) AVI video using
a
Fuji FinePix F10 camera. Do I need some kind of special software to
make
the Samsung video work?
You need the appropriate codecs installed on your system in order to
play back the file. You should be able to determine which codecs
(audio and video) are used in the file by examining it in the free
GSpot program.

You should try playing the file in the VideoLAN VLC media player
program, also free.
