That is just about the fastest chip my socket 478 motherboard will
take. Hopefully it won't be a waste of $80 because I just ordered it
from NewEgg. I'll post results when I have them later this week.
If it plays smooth HD video with my old 9200 video card, then I'll
return the Geoforce 7600 GS I got from Circuit City today, also $80.
It didn't take more than a percent or two off my CPU load, and the
video only improved a touch. I think the new CPU is going to do the
trick, albeit with higher power consumption and more heat. Should
have ordered it months ago.
Is the motherboard Prescott compatible ? What kind of motherboard
or computer is it (make/model) ?

Never really know until you drop it in, right? I've checked here:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&mo...
and it is listed as the very last compatible CPU:
P4-3E GHz (800 FSB, L2 cache:1MB, HT, 90nm)
although it doesn't specify Prescott. The Prescott is HT, while the
Northwood is not, plus the 90mm
is another clue. Seems like it should work.
I built this PVR box myself a few years back to record analog video.
It has an Asus P4R800-VM motherboard. Funny thing, I thought I was
ordering the P4R800-VM Deluxe, but I had a brain fart. Too excited to
exchange via mail, so I built it anyway with the wrong motherboard.
Maybe it isn't that funny.
Upgrading now so it can do HD video from clear QAM cable via a newly
purchased HVR-1600. If I didn't love the PVR's Silverstone case so
much, I would have just bought a cheap dual-core box from Circuit
City, dropped in a decent PCI-E video card, and saved myself some
headaches.
Total cost for this upgrade is $63.59 for the HVR-1600, $84.79 for the
Geoforce 7600 GS, and $79.99 for the P4 3.0E for a total of $228.37.
If it works, it will be worth it.
I got everything setup last night just in time to record American Idol
in 720p using a trial version of SageTV. Because my underpowered
system can't handle simultaneous recording and watching of a HD show,
we had to wait until the recording was complete, and then we watched
it using Media Player Classic. Other than a few minor video issues
that my wife didn't even notice, it played back nicely. Have to do
some more experimenting, but maybe 720p is easier on my system than
1080i, which was the resolution of my original test files.
The new CPU will be nice because SageTV's interface is completely
unusable for me while watching 720p or 1080i. I will have to buy a
full version of SageTV (using a demo now), which sort of sucks since I
own two copies of Snapstream's BTV. BTV doesn't support clear QAM
from the HVR-1600, only from the much more expensive Silicon Dust HD
Home Run (HDHR). The setup procedure for clear QAM with the HDHR is
tricky with BTV, plus it costs almost three times what I paid for the
HVR-1600.
I did change one thing about my system that might have helped. I
swapped two 512 sticks of PC2100 for PC3200 and PC2700 sticks that I
had in my other machine. I used the memory tool at www.crucial.com to
help make this decision, plus a tool called CPU-Z. I should really
have a matched pair in the PVR to take advantage of its DDR
capability, but that costs about as much as the new CPU with probably
little performance effect for this application.
Sorry to get a little OT for rec.video.desktop, but maybe this will
help someone. Thanks for the help.
