I used to edit with digital 8 and minidv cameras. Go on adobe premiere
log the clips and then batch capture.

Is it possible to do the same with the hard drive cameras? I am using
a sony DCR-SR42 and can't get the device to show on premiere. I only
get, device is offline.

Doesn't a HDD camera produce blocks of video called
"files" (in computer terms)?  Can't you just "copy" the
files from the camera onto the HDD in your computer?
Why would you even need "batch capture" when you
can drag-n-drop a bunch of files?

I suppose there  woudl be some worth in being able to capture only the
frames you want from the hard drive. Say.. if you only need ten minutes of
clips from 50 different files and you don't have the storage for all of
them..

That sounds like a good product to develop for the new
generation of HDD camcorders. :-)- Hide quoted text -

Yes, you can copy the files from the camera drive to your hard drive.
But, if the user doesn't want the whole chunk, which I believe are 18
minute chunks, they are stuck. So far the only hard drive based
camcorder I have found with a 1394 onboard is the JVC Hi-Def GZ-HD7
camcorder. Like the original poster, the first time I handled one of
these hard drive cameras I was completely frustrated by it just from
the stand-point of wasting hard drive space on the computer with
larger files than the batched ones I was used to.

Just my 2 cents.
