I haven't found a single OBJECTIVE, reputable source yet...

Can someone point me in the right direction????

Well, despite the fact this is more of a rant from frustration than a
call for help giving us the equipment you are working with, I'll take
a shot.
1) Presuming you are trying to capture video from a tape camcorder,
you've learned the USB connection only captures stills from the memory
card and now you need something called Firewire or IEEE1394. Yeah,
gibberish, I know. Fact - any Firewire card will do. Usually under
$20. Again, a presumption, that you are working with a desktop
instead of laptop (most laptops have a Firewire connection built in),
you need a PCI card. Just buy any one, hopefully that comes with a
cable, maybe even some software, open your case, plug it in, start her
up and you're cookin'. You'll need the card, and a cable. Firewire
connections come in two flavors, 4 pin and 6 pin; the difference is
whether or not power goes through the cable. Your camcorder has a 4
pin, most PCI cards have a 6 pin connection. So just get a 6 pin one
end, 4 pin the other, Firewire cable. In fact, this is the most
popular type cable. Again, any brand, from $3 to $20. True, some new
cables can be bad, but so can a new Cadillac, so just get it, capture,
and THEN your real questions will start. Oh, and buy the card
anywhere. Ebay is fine, just look at seller's rating. Most any
electronic or computer store. Don't pay over $25 for just the card,
then you're getting ripped. So, card and cable, can get both under
$20, up to whatever, say $30, again for both card and cable. Notice I
didn't mention any brands. A Firewire capture is just a pass-through
device, no computer, card, or cpu processing required. You're making
an exact copy of what is on your tape so there is virtually no
difference in quality between Firewire cards.
2) If you are trying to capture analog video, as from an older
camcorder, VCR, or other source, see above posts and get the 100 or
300 card.
All above presumes you are working with a PC, and not a Mac.
Next time you post a question, please give us more detail. What
hardware video you have (exact make and model), what it is going into
etc. If you have a DVD camcorder, or maybe even a hard drive
camcorder, or an older analog, the answer will be different.
You mentioned hardware, but you'll also need software. On a PC,
Windows Movie Maker 2 can capture, and it's free. Otherwise, your
editing software will probably capture also. If you are working with
a new camcorder it probably came with software. It helps to know what
camcorder so we can help with settings. Standard definition capture
to avi, high definition probably mpg. If AVCHD camcorder you'll need
specialized software. Kinda get the idea we need lots more info to
help you? As specific as possible please. Oh, to directly answer
your question, I don't know any objective information site
either ; ) Just ask here with lots of details. Tell us what video
device, what type computer, cpu, ram, hard drives, memory, etc. And
software. If you need hardware capture help, you'll probably need
lots of help on editing, burning to DVD, sound, etc, etc.
