Hi,
I have a new Canon HV20 and I am trying to transfer some video to our
computer which is running windows xp profressional service pack 2.
When I connected the camcorder to the computer using the firewire the
computer said it found new hardware and installed it successfuly. I
didn't write down what it actually installed but it was a little
confusing whatever it said in that window. It didn't say that it
found a new canon camera - just some device message.
When I coonnect the camcorder now I hear a beep so the computer seems
to be detecting it.
When I run Windows Movie Maker it can't find the device. It says a
video capture device was not detected.
This used to work fine for me with our old Cannon Optura 20 but I
recently changed the mulitmedia card and added a separate card for the
firewire since the new soundcard I got didn't have a firewire
connection on it.
So I think it might have to do with this new card I got. The guy at
the store said it should work fine.
I would appreciate any tips for how to get this working.
Thanks in advance,
Steve
That camera is an HDV model, isn't it?
If that's the case, then I don't think WMM can handle it.
You'll need to look at other NLE packages that can.

Yes, it is and HDV model.

What other NLE packages are available? What does NLE stand for?

Thanks,
Steve

NLE = non-linear editor (or editing).
Inexpensive packages like Sony's Vegas Movie Studio can handle HDV.
I'm sure that other manufacturers such as Adobe and Ulead offer
comparable ones but, since I'm not familiar with their lines, I'll leave
that to other users to comment on.

Mike

I've been editing the video from my HV-20 in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, which
handles it wonderfully. Premiere Pro will capture, as well, but I prefer
the free standalone program HDVSplit for capture.

Anticipating the OP's next question, there are two ways to put HDV on DVD.
If you have a BluRay DVD player, you can export your finished project as
an mpeg2 HDV file, burn the file to a standard data (not video) DVD and
most BluRay players will play it as a media file. Note that you will not
be able to do menus. You'll be limited to about 43 minutes of material.
I found that my BluRay player has trouble with dual-layer DVD-Rs.

If you have an HD-DVD player, Ulead's Movie Factory 6 (under $100) can
author a standard DVD in HD-DVD format, meaning you'll be able to do
menus. Note that Movie Factory is a consumer product and lacks the
sophistication and control of a true authoring program like Adobe Encore.
I haven't yet tried the Ulead product with a dual-layer disk, but I
suspect it should not be a problem. In theory, this should allow
producing a HD disk close to 90 minutes of high-def material.

The Adobe site says Premiere Pro CS3 includes Adobe OnLocation (Windows
only) and Adobe Encore CS3. I am still waiting for my copy (Adobe can't seem
to keep my order straight) so could you confirm the authoring capability of
PP CS3?

Also, any reservations about the fact that HDVSplit is still listed as beta
after 2 years? I am hoping Santa leaves an HV-20 at my house this year so am
exploring capture options. Am I correct in my reading of the scenalyzer web
site that it does not capture the HD stream (.m2t??)?
