Hi, I've recently bought a sony handycam minidv and I would like to
backup my video on cd/dvd.
However 1 hour video turned out to be more than 10GB on my hard disk
using normal AVI format.
What is the best quality compression I should use to fit 1 hour (or at
least 30mins) video into a normal 4.7GB dvd?
Also, is it better (in term of video quality) to transfer to the hard
disk in AVI format and compress later (into MPEG or whatever) or is
better to compress while transfer? Does it make any difference?
Many thanks!
This is being discussed downthread with regard to VHS tape archiving.
Actually, for MiniDV, the MiniDV tapes themselves make for a good archive
and aren't all that expensive. Plus, you don't have the quality loss with
further compression into Mpeg or other such format. The tapes are also
liable to last longer than any DVD you burn. If you really want to store on
DVDs (for ease of access, etc.), is it really that important that you get
one hour on one DVD vs. 2 1/2 DVDs? DVDs are cheap these days and pretty
compact. Also, you'll waste time and tie up your rendering program
converting your AVI-DV files to a suitable further compressed format. That
said, I'm sure someone will be able to provide you with some settings to
achieve your 1 hr/DVD goal. If you do opt for DVD storage whatever the
format, if the archive is important to you, I'd recommend regularly (maybe
annually) recopying your DVD archives (with verification) and keeping one or
two old copies. DVDs that you burn are apt to degrade and might not last
more than a few years.
