tools. A quick glance at the list shows that at least half of them
appear to be free.

Yeah, and all of them are crap. They either don't work (at best)
and/or they install junk codecs that hose your system.

You get what you pay for.

OTOH, Apple Quicktime Player Pro costs ~$35 (last time I looked)

Then it should be a bargain at only $29.99. :)

And the MPEG-2 Playback Component, should you feel that you need it,
like I do, is just an additional $19.99.

Absolutely. Just this past week I had a need to encode five files to
the PSP for someone. The source files were AVC/AAC-encoded .mov files
which my encoder of choice, Sony's Image Converter 3.1, didn't like
for some reason (it's usually happy being fed .mov files, but not in
this case), so one-by-one I opened the .mov files in QT Player Pro and
saved them out as RGB/PCM .avi files that the Sony Image Converter
program was happy with.

The AVC/AAC-encoded .mp4 files that I created not only look great on
the PSP itself, but using a new PSP 2001 Slim & Lite with a component
video connection to a Sony PVM-series monitor, they look even better
than I ever expected. Client was pleased, too.
