I downloaded my first TV program this morning (an episode I missed of
the UK BBC1 comedy sitcom 'Outnumbered'). It's a 224 MB file that
GSpot reports without errors as far as I can see. But it won't play in
VirtualDub 1.6.19. I immediately get "Warning: Nothing to output.
Bframe decoder lag"
Then, when I scroll forward I can see the video frames, but when I
tried the Play button again I get: "No audio decompressor could be
found to decompress the source audio format. (source format tag:
0050)"

Yet it plays fine in all my other players (WMP10, PowerDVD, VLC, Nero
ShowTime, etc).

I've posted this in the specialised VirtualDub forum, but maybe
someone here can suggest a likely cause please? Always regarded
VirtualDub as one of my most trustworthy progs!

What format did GSpot have for the video, it appears
to be MPEG. Plain old VDub didn't do MPEG, I use
VDubMod which will input MPEG and there is a VDub-
MPEG available,as well.

A source audio format of 50 is usually AC3.

Luck;
Ken

Hi Ken.

It's an AVI. Here's an extract from GSpot:

--- Container Information ---
Base Type (e.g "AVI"): AVI(.AVI)
Subtype (e.g "OpenDML"): OpenDML (AVI v2.0),
Interleave (in ms): 80
Preload (in ms): 504
Audio alignment("split across interleaves"): Aligned
Total System Bitrate (kbps): 0
Bytes Missing (if any): 0
Number of Audio Streams: 1

--- Audio Information ---
MPEG Stream ID (e.g. "0xbd"):
MPEG VOB file Substream(e.g. "0x80"):
Audio Codec (e.g. "AC3"): 0x0050 MPEG-1 Layer 2
Audio Codec Status (e.g. "Codec Is Installed"): Codec(s) are Installed
Audio Sample Rate (Hz): 48000
Audio Bitrate(kbps): 256
Audio Bitrate Type ("CBR" or "VBR"): CBR
Audio Channel Count (e.g. "2" for stereo): 2

And, as mentioned, the file plays in all my players - except
VirtualDub

VirtualDub says:

Audio stream
-----------------
Sampling rate: 48000Hz
Channels: 2 (Stereo)
Sample precision: N/A
Compression: Unknown (tag 0050) <----
Layout: 21944 chunks (0.50s preload
Length: 73165 samples (29:15.96)
Min/avg/max/total frame size: 2304/2560/16128 (54874K)
Data rate: 256 kbps (0.93% overhead)

Finally, after rendering to a DVD-ready MPEG (about 920 MB), GSpot
says:
Container
------------
MPEG-2 Program Stream << { 1 vid, 1 aud }
Sys Bitrate: 10080 kb/s VBR

Audio
-------
Codec MPEG-1 Layer 2
Info 0xc0:48000Hz 224 kb/s tot Stereo

I've since downloaded several similar AVI file (TV episodes as
binaries from Usenet), and they gave exactly the same problem in
VirtualDub.

VirtualDubMod gave same result too.
