There's something extremely annoying that's keeping me from using
Vegas Video 7 efficiently.

I load all my clips in the project media window (about 50 items, 200
MB of mp4 videos), I let it build the peaks, and then, without
anything in the timeline and while I'm doing other things, the
program just freezes and says "Not Responding" in the top of the VV
window. Every single time, without fail, until I need to kill the
process in task manager.

WTF??? This is extremely annoying. What's the damn program doing
instead of just sitting there, like I left it, that locks it up? Is
there a known bug (oops, I mean "feature") with certain file
formats? Is there a setting I need to change, or should I just chuck
this POS and go with Premiere?

If by "while I'm doing other things" you're referring to activities
on your PC, I'd recommend not doing them. If you're working on
something before opening Vegas, finish them and close the programs.

Ideally, you should try to work in an "optimized" environment,
regardless of which video/audio editing software that you're using.
Things to consider include:

- shut down/turn off unnecessary services
- turning off unnecessary programs/applications
- regulary defrag your hard drive
- turn off system sounds
- turn off visual effects
- optimize sound card latency
- store projects on a separate hard drive

If you're not sure how to do any of these things, do a google search
for "optimize pc for video editing" or something equivalent to it.
There are plenty of sites that offer free optimization information.

Here's the "official" background applications list, right from Sony
Tech support:

That's not it guys.

Again: VV's CPU usage goes UP when I return from any open application (such as web browser) back to VV and I get the hourglass cursor. CPU usage goes back down to near zero if I leave VV and open another window.

VV does something when I return to it that causes it to hang my computer. In Task Manager, VV is at 100% (everything else is at near zero).

VV is the culprit here, not other applications.

I'll be looking further into the mp4 codec, since this happens only when I use mp4 clips. But thanks to everyone for trying.

Options - Prefs - General.
Look at the box "Close media files when not the active application".
If it's checked, uncheck it (or vice versa) and see if this still happens to you. BTW, mine is checked.
