I've considered going mac with a quad core but near as I can tell a
powerfull pro model would be upwards of 5,000.
I bought the 8 core (3Ghz ) macs here in LA with 4G Ram and a 250G HD
for
around $4100. You can get them with only 2G for ~$3830.
No monitor mentioned... so with that it would be close to 5,000.
I noticed a series of your posts about the 8core setup. I guess all
in all you are happy with its power?
The power is what you should expect from that proc series.
I noticed you said you don't use the mac OS.
I don't know much about mac but I think the Freebsd based side of
it would be welcome since I am a longtime linux user.
Then you would enjoy OSX. I suppose. I find it clunky and kidlike. There are
SO many things in Windows that can not be done on the Mac as easily. LIke
File | Open dialogs. IN Windows you can drag and delete and copy and paste
and EVERYTHING in most file open dialogs. Something I do all the time.
There's more.. but I digress
MANY things just take more mouse clicks on the mac. I would not have
purchased this box if it didn't run Windows.
But all my editing is done on windows here. I experiment with some
things to do with ediing on linux but find the windows apps are at a
much higher development level.
So do you think I'd have to run somekind of windows emulation or
vmware to really get after an editing job?
No.. Bootcamp is an assortment of drivers for the MacPro which allow the
hardware to be used under Windows. BUT. The entire process is not supported
by Apple so I can NOT recommend it as a pure windows workstation although
many DO use it that way.
And if so I guess you find the highpowered 8core processing to be
worth the extra hassle?
Yes. The multiple core Xeons are the fastest solution out there. The Apple
was simply the cheapest.
Here's the thing. The Mac Pro, with the DVD superdrive, a decent video card,
250G and 2GIG Ram is under $4k. Monitora are cheap nowdays. So for $4500 you
ought to be able to setup a rig pretty well.
So far my Mac Pro is only a render slave for 3DSMax and Combustion. I may
install Premiere on it and give it a shot if I have some time but it runs
very well on my PCs so no need to do that.
