Thanks to everyone for the ideas.
The problem is not one of the disk format - both computers can see the
files just fine.
The problem is that the DV file created by iMovie when I import in
from the camera is not readable by Windows Movie Maker. Movie Maker
can see the file but it has no idea what do with it.
We were trying to find a file format which was as high a resolution as
possible that both applications could read as a base file from which
we could work while playing with the video.
Ken's suggestion of each application importing the files isn't really
what we're looking for - the files are running at about 200Mb per
minute of video, and while disk storage is cheap, it seems silly to us
to keep the same information on two formats if there's a common ground
we could find between the two applications.

I've seen it where creative people could share output/production
resources, but you must have a unique marriage if you think you
can share input resources. The one making the single source file
will eventually face some suspicion that any problem the other is
having could be the fault of the source. The situation you have
described is competitive by its nature, whether you see it that way,
now, or not.
Share a printer, share a burner, but you should each create your
own source files.
Advice is free and worth what you pay for it, especially on the
Net.
Luck;
