Yes, this happens with the Pansonic too; Windows XP identifies the
camcorder as an "E" drive (external hard drive). I don't know that
this necessarily prevents the import/capture/download, but I do know
that the only transfer cable provided with the machine is USB at one
end/IEEE 1364 (or whatever) at the other, and that NO video is
recorded on Movie Maker when I connect it.

Well, thanks for the willingness to respond. Makes me feel less
lonely :(.

Still pretty unlikely its a firewire AND USB cable. I suppose it could be, but probably just USB. So, you have a HDD camcorder? Then you don't really need to capture. You just move the files from your camcorder to a computer hard drive.

Do they have a .MOD extension? Rename them MPG. I don't know if movie maker will import Mpg files.

This seems to to be a rather annoying part of HDD camcorders. You get a funky file extension, and have to go around as ask people how to edit the files.
To be fair they give you a software bundle with three programs, (Editing, Player and a DVD production program).
Another way out of the problem is to go to Explorer and open the <Tools> then<folder options> then <File Types> tabs and set up MOD as being like MPG then you just right click and the MOD files open in whatever program you have set-up to edit or open MPG files. In fact I have Pinnacle Studio 10+ and this can work with MOD files as does Windows Media Player, Cyber PowerDVD and DivX.

True, they do give you an entry level software disk.

I recently had an instance where a local school shot an assembly on a HDD and asked me to put it on DVD and a Web appropriate file. They didn't have any idea about any software or manuals. (Seems most institutions are less organized than even the most disorganized consumer). A few Googles later, I was informed that the Mod file were just sekret Mpg files. LOL. A quick rename and all was good.

I guess my point being is that it did not seem that the HDD camcorders were really the easy button solution they are presented to be. Most people on this list would consider the extension difference trivial, but lots out of the box users would find it a brick wall should they lose the original software. (Or upgrade to Vista and find it doesn't work anymore!! ::)))
