I did run across this if the solution is the need of the Canopus DV codec.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Canopus_DV_Codec.htm

I installed this but haven't rebooted yet -- it won't play yet either.
So perhaps I need to reboot first. Will let you know tomorrow. Thanks!

I decided to reboot now but it didn't make any difference. :(

It isn't a Canopus codec that you need. It's the ACDV.dll file that I
mentioned (FourCC = ACDV). Comes as part of ACDSee Pro Photo Manager.
Installed it (trial version) last night on an expendable machine (old
Win2K SP4 system). Later uninstalled it. The codec got left behind
(not uninstalled with the remainder of the app).

Have since transferred just the codec to another system. Got it
working there by manually adding entries to the registry (always fun).

It's a Video for Windows codec, not a DirectShow filter, and no
registration (via RegSvr32.exe) is required, or possible, actually,
since the file has no DllRegisterServer/DllUnregisterServer functions.

Was able to play back the .avi file that I had mentioned in a previous
post. Played fine in Windows Media Player 6.4 and 9.0 as well as in
the ActiveMovie ActiveX Control 2.0 (AMovie.ocx). Attempted playback
in GSpot caused GSpot to crash.

Need sleep now. More later if needed. Suggest give ACDSee Pro Photo
Manager a try. Will not destroy your system. Just don't let it take
over any file types. You have the option to avoid this at install
time. You can also decline installing the Yahoo! Toolbar.

Good luck!
