Hi Tim,
How does capturing 'perfect' quality footage for free sound to you?
The most common tape format used today is 'MiniDV', which is used by
the majority of digital camcorders available today. You can also get
camcorders that record directly onto a DVD or a hard drive.
If you have some movies you shot on VHS, 8mm or Hi-8 tape, then most
digital camcorders have a 'pass-through' option where you can connect
your older (analogue) cancorder to it and capture the footage on your
computer hard drive digitally.
Most digital camcorders have a 'DV Out' option and your computer will
need a firewire port (1394). Most computers have these as standard or
you can install a firewire card very cheaply.
Connect the two together with the correct lead and if you are running
Windows XP, everything will be done for you automatically because XP
comes with a free video editor called 'Movie Maker' which is perfect
for beginners. In fact, I still use it on occasion and I've been
producing/editing movies for over 15 years.
Movie Maker will capture your footage from the digital camcorder via
the firewire port and you can then edit away, using transitions, music,
sound effects, titles, graphics and special effects for all your worth.
All for free!
Hope that has been of some help to you,
Pete
