Re: HELP! CNN and MSNBC videos play wthout sound

I don't know if I can respond to myself or not, but I've found "the
cure", at least on my system. Do a search for xvid and ac3v codecs.
You'll find you can download them for free. That fixed the audio
problem for me. It's likely the ac3v that's doing the trick, but I
grabbed them both and it's working.

The streaming from MSNBC must use one or both of these codecs.

Hope this helps others.

I have had the same problem for months. You would think MSN or MSNBC
or both would want these things to function properly, but I find little
to no support from anyone other than the normal "you probably do not
have the proper items downloaded to function well". Yeah right.

I sure would appreciate help also to get this audio to work on other
than advertisements. Odd, that ads ALWAYS seem to work fine.

I don't know what Tstream is but I've noticed that this term is
referenced on any video that won't play sound on my computer. I see it
at the bottom of the video player when in full screen mode something
like this...

MSNBC video_Man_Bites_Dog Tstream_FFv5.0_D1

So I agree with someone's comment above that it likely doesn't have
anything to do with Windows Media Player because it's streaming.

Wanted to at least let you others having the same problem know that
you're not alone.

Hi there,

I don't know if this is the right place or not to ask for help. When I
play videos fromm CNN they play fine but no sound.

When i play videos from MSNBC there commercials have sound but when
the news item starts it always has no sound.

If it were Fox News I might be more motivated.

The first thing you need to establish is the nature of these files
you are playing. How is the video and audio described by the
free GSpot utility?

Ken

It's almost certainly streaming stuff so its probably some sort of java
or flash or active x thingy problem type stuff.

Then VLC might provide some information/help.

Tell ya what, I often have problems playing videos on MSNBC's site. If it
is streaming stuff then Windows Media player is probably a dead end. The
stuff tends to play in-line in the browser and there is no launch of WMP
or any other media player.

This is what makes me think he's getting the standard Microsoft random
tech support response that usually begins with "Did you reformat your
computer and reinstall Windows?"

Most likely.

I don't visit CNN or MSNBC, so I have no way of knowing how
they work their video streaming, but you can often right-click on
the video's link and find the URL to address with VLC. VLC can
even output to a file. My above post was intended to refer to just
getting the "Stream and Media Info..." result, so we could have some
idea what the actual format might be.

Luck;
Ken
