Can someone recommend a *quality* tapeless camcorder that also doubles
as an mp3 player, preferably one with a stereo mic in jack? Even better
would be a camera with actual optical zoom.
Much appreciated...

Most camera's and or camcorders have actual optical zooms. How much
optical zoom varies, often by price.

However, I think it would be quite unusual to find one that doubles as
an MP3 player.... Although your followup sentence 'preferable one with a
stereo mic in jack' suggests that you perhaps want also use it to record
MP3 files? Again, not really a marriage made in heaven....

Perhaps if you described what you were wanting to acheive, because I
find that people often construct elaborate rube goldberg contraptions in
their head for what they think they need when it actually turns out that
the solution is far more simple.

oooookay then. Someone stuck an MP3 player into a camcorder. Not
entirely sure why, but there ya go. Actually with MP4 video its not even
hobbiest quality. Good for casual home use though. Frankly, I'm holding
out until they put in an espresso maker.

Some of these, like the Aiptec MPVR are light and small enough to stick in
an RC plane, and I've seen some excellent airborne videos taken with them.

640 by 480 with no obvious artifacts of compression and excellent color. It
will also play MP3 and you can get a 2 gbyte SD memory card for well under a
hundred bucks. That's good for more than 40 minutes of recording. While not
as versatile as my generation or two old Sony camcorder its pretty damned
good for the hundred or so bucks that you can get it for. I'd check it out
before turning my nose up.

I have to admit that I thought I was going to look at crap when I downloaded
a video made by sticking an Aiptek in an inexpensive foam RC plane, but I
was converted. I fly pretty good stuff and I looked at that as junk until I
saw the performance.

BTW, my own equiipment is limited by my Sony in record mode on the ground.
My airborne gear has more resolution than my camcorder can reproduce and I
get to see that everytime I use a monitor to focus. The camera is a KX141
from Black Widow, 2/3's of an ounce and 480 lines of resolution. Sharp as a
tack on my monitor and noticably less sharp when recorded on my Sony. I'd
get something better but my gear includes transmitters, recievers, HMD and
what have you. A total upgrade would involve living in a tent for a while.

Anyway, don't sell the inexpensive digital memory cameras short. They are
way better than I expected and I think, allowing for lack of features, they
are surprisingly good. And... They play MP3!

Final comment: Digital zoom is accomplished with a sensor that has way more
pixels than the 640 by 480 image needs, so until you hit around 3X you are
still getting full resolution.
