Just for refererence. I know from personal experience that the Sony
TRV120 and 320 have this pass thru feature. I agree with other
comments that this is definitely the way to go to get those old analog
tapes digitized for high quality unless you want to use one of those
cheap and dirty DVD recorders with MPEG hardware and live with the
quality.
Personally, I'm beginning to think that may be preferable since its so
much faster. Otherwise, it may not ever get done just due to time
constraints. Obviously, it depends on how many you need to convert.
Have fun.

Are you saying that the Signal Covert Function is not a
measure passthrough functionality?
I would certainly NOT spend hundreds (or thousands) of $$$
on a highly questionable phrase written by a non-technical
marketing gerb. Unless you can verify independently that a
particular model of camcorder is known to support pass-thru
functionality (and in the direction(s) you need), you should
assume that the unit does NOT do it. These newsgroups have
a history of people with buyer's remorse coming here and whining
that their new camcorder does NOT do pass-through. Or as
has already been stated, "Never Assume!"
I am also on dialup at home and I have found a quick way to
check something like this is to Google for the Brand and Model
number along with the word pasthrough (or whatever other
feature you are researching like "mic input", etc.) Among the
first 100 hits you are quite likely to find several reliable and
independent sources which will say that definitely the model
DOES have the feature, or complaining that it DOESN'T have
the stated feature.
Note further that models for various geographies (notoriously
Europe) have artifical limitations on capabilities for tax-
avoidance purposes. So NTSC models that do pass-thru
may have that feature disabled in the PAL version (because
there is a higher tax on "VCR"s than on camcorders). Dunno
whether you have similar goofy tax laws there in Antipodia?
