I have a video that is not presenting its audio. Apparently I do not have the appropriate audio decoder, or it is not properly installed.
If I open it with TMPGEnc Xpress 3.0, it reports that the clip has 48000 Hz, 2 Ch sound, but displays a flat wave form in Cut-Edit. It plays without complaint, but without any audio either.
Windows Media Player behaves similarly. It will play the video without complaint, but also without audio. The properties indicates that the audio codec is "Nero Digital Audio Decoder."
I have Nero Ultra 6.6.0.8 installed.
Virtual Dub reports, when the video is played, that "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format." The Audio stream compression is reported as "Unknown (tag 2000)."
GSpot that the Audio codec is "0x2000(AC3, Dolby Laboratories, Inc) AC3" with a status of "Codec(s) Installed." I suspect this tool can help be discover what my problem is, but I don't really know how to use it.
It may be relevant that I have purchased and installed the TMPGEnc AC3 Encoder/Decoder and have used it (apparently) to encode some AC3 DVDs. It does not appear to be decoding my audio in this case.
Ok back to GSpot. If I click the "1", then "2", under "GSpot Aud" in the "Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests," I get this output:
(Src)-->>-(A)-->[AVI Splitter ]>--(B)-->[CyberLink Audio Decoder ]>--(C)-->[Default DirectSound Device ]

Audio Render OK. Use [3] to play.

I do have the freeware/shareware version of jetAudio installed.
Can someone advise me as to how to resolve this problem?
Regardless, thanks for sticking with me to the end of this description.
I ran into this before using TMPGEnc Xpress 3.0, but can't remember
how i fixed it
I think it had something to it being 5 channel AC3
either i used:
1--Audacity showed all 5 channels and i mixied it down to 2 channel
stereo, then let TMPGE re-encode audio to ac3
GSpot seems to think that it's just 2-channel, but I'll try Audacity later to see what it says.
2--Loaded the video in Goldwave and saved audio '2 channel stereo' wav
Right now, after having installed the K-Lite Mega Codec pack, is that I can play the video (with sound) using Windows Media Player and Virtual Dub, but it appears to lock up TMPGEnc Express.
I tried splitting the video into an AVI with video only and a WAV sound track. Unfortunately, TMPGEnc did not seem to like the audio while attempting to encode those sources into a DVD-compatible MPG. "Invalid sample format," or something similar.
Right now, I'm just attempting to encode the AVI(AC3 audio) file with TMPGEnc Xpress on the hopes that it can transcode it, even though the playback is goofy. (There's no real reason to be optimistic in that endeavor, but I'd feel stupid to find out that the most obvious method would have worked, after jumping through many other hoops.)
