sorry for the vaqueness - I am just starting out - I guess my first
question
should be..

Can any video camera be used to capture video to the computer - Without
first recording to the video tape?

Most digital camcorders can do this. The standard means of connection is
via a 1394/Firewire port. If your camcorder has a 1394/Firewire port, then
it can do it. If it doesn't, the only way to do it is by analog capture and
digitization. Cameras with USB ports only support low-quality streaming,
e.g., as a webcam.

Is that ability dependent on the camera?

Yes, though virtually all digital camcorders, i.e. miniDV or Digital8, can
do this. It is possible that the very cheapest cannot.

I understand I need the capture software and capture card - but how do I
determine if the camera will do what is needed?

See above. What camera do you have?

You don't need special capture software if:

1. You're using Microsoft XP, and
2. You have a 1394/Firewire port on your computer.

I need to be able to record directly to my computer hard drive.

Can someone give me an idea of how to fingure out if I can do this with
my
current hardware/sw/w?

Your description of "my current hardware" is a bit vague, to say the
least
;-) So I'll give you an equally vague answer: yes you can. If you have
the
adequate hardware....
