Mark, thanks for your reply. It's not for a job or anything. I want to
be able to capture VHS video clips (with stereo audio) from a VCR and
archive to DVD.
I know I need to get some kind of video capture card to do this. But at
some point in the future I may also want to use my PC like a PVR
together with TitanTV or something like that so I sort of want to get a
card that can do that also.
One of the things that is confusing to me is that allthough none of the
capture cards capture audio, they all have audio inputs that are then
re-routed to the sound card. What is the purpose of this? Is there any
reason the audio signals need to pass through the capture card first?
Can I just connect the audio outs from the VCR directly to the
soundcard and get the same result? It's up to the particular capture
software to syncronize the audio with the video right?

Supposed to use? Maybe if you give us some details of your situation
(e.g. is this a new job?) and what exactly you want/need to do we can
help further.
VirtualDub, Huffvuv etc are tools for AVI capture and editing, not
MPEG. The Hauppauge cards mentioned so far capture directly to
MPEG and are not suitable for AVI capture.

This whole topic is very confusing to me. So far all I know is I'm
supposed to use VirtualDub and the Huffyuv codec and a capture card
with the Brooktree/Conexant chip. From there it gets more complicated.
I'm sure once I get set up and start playing with the software I'll
understand it better. But first I need to decide which capture card to
get. It's kind of a chicken and egg problem.

What's the difference between the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150, 250 and 350?
How do they compare with offerings from Kworld? Don't they all use the
same Conexant Chip Set?
The 150, 350 and 500 all use the same Conexant encoder.
The 150 is one encoder. The 350 is one encoder plus a hardware
MPEG decoder (of limited value, since it only decodes output
generated on the card -- it's _not_ a general purpose decoder).
The 500 is two encoders for dual channel capability.
Can't comment on Kworld, I have no experience with their products.
If you want a good approach that doesn't use the Conexant chip;
You might want to include www.snazzishop.com for their DVD III
products, they are supposedly based on the Kfir-II chip and a
Philips SAA7114H A/D decoder chip. Plus they use the great
Movie Mill capture software.
The card I use has the same design and components.
Luck;
Ken
PS. I also have one of their DVD-V which uses a conexant chip
and has component inputs (Doesn't do HD though) it does a good
job but is not as flexible/controllable as the Kfir-II based cards.
