My laptop doesn't recognize my camcorder

I recently installed Premiere Pro on my Amilo A1640 laptop. The laptop
has a 4-pin IEEE1394a FireWire port, and I was planning on connecting
it to my Sony DSR-PD150P camera, but this doesn't seem to work. Do I
need any device drivers that I don't know of? Or do I need some kind of
laptop sized video card to go with the FireWire port?
