Any disadvantage to burning as slowly as possible?

Is this still correct? Other than the time factor, is there any disadvantage
to burning at the slowest speed your burner will allow?
Yes. You =may= find that the latest media are =not= optimized for 1x (or other slow) burn speeds, and that your PI/PO error rates will actually be higher than a 16x burn.
If the drive is tested, also, make sure you're using the 'best' media for that drive - see http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Home.aspx?CategoryId=1 for a listing of drives, then look at the PI/PO scans for each media tested and see if you can pick out 1 or 2 makes that are particularly reliable for your drive. This will help you achieve the lowest error burns at any speed.
eg. if you look at this example, this is a Verbatim 16x burn on the Plextor 760a. The PI/PO error rate is so low as to be consider a superb burn, at any speed. Unless magic happens, you may find that you won't get better burns at a lower speed off other drives.

The biggest thing people don't do first?
Review all of the DVD burner test articles online first to find those drives that produce the best (ie. lowest error, PI/PO) burns across a wide range of media, and then buy the 'best' drives out there today. Instead, they may buy a cheap drive that produces horrible PI/PO error rates, and then go wondering why $#!#@ their discs go bad.
www.cdrinfo.com and http://homepage2.nifty.com/yss/ have TONS of PI/PO error rate scans from many drives on many media. Please! Read first, buy afterwards.
My top picks - Pioneer 109/111 & Plextor 716a/760a. These generally do very well across most media, excellent on the best media, and superior on the best Verbatin DL+R media vs. other drives. And some can be had as low as $40 on www.newegg.com. (the older models are currently better if you want more mature firmware along with RPC1 and cheaper price; you'll have to wait for the later models to have these, and at 18x for the expensive 760a, you're not gaining much over the 16x burns on the other models at all - a dozen seconds or so)
