This is oversimplfied, but generally more DVD drives older
than 3-4 years will be compatible with -R, while more newer
drives either use +R or can handle either format.

I can see the advantage to -R is that it would be compatible with both
of these generalized groups.

For distribution to large companies or other groups, -R is still
the way to go. But if a client has mostly new computer
hardware then choose +R.

What is the advantage in using +R in this case?

It'll cover newer drives that are +R only, as well as drives
that handle both formats.

There are very, very few drives that are "+R only" for _reading_, just for
writing.
